In 1995 the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) contracted with the University of Florida to assist the Department, the Florida Greenways Commission and the Florida Greenways Coordinating Council in planning Florida's Statewide Greenways System. Although the University's role in the Statewide Greenways System Planning Project encompassed a number of different activities, its primary task was to prepare a recommended design for the Statewide Greenways System including an ecological sub-system or network and a recreational/cultural network. The University Team's primary tool to accomplish this was the Florida Greenways Decision Support Model.
