Greenway Development

Goals:

  Greenways Development Project Site

GOAL 1:
Create An Ecological Linkage Between Osceola National Forest To The North And Ichetucknee State Park To The South.

  • objective: Locate greenway along existing “linking” elements.
  • objective: Identify nodes and linkages along path of “least resistance”.
    Subgoal:
Protect Water Quality And Quantity Within The Ichetucknee Trace.
  • objective: Protect and integrate open water and riparian corridors into greenway.
  • objective: Protect as many sinks and wetlands as possible through integration into greenway.
    Subgoal:
Enhance Biodiversity Within Greenway For Long-Term Ecological Health.
  • objective: Link uplands and lowlands where possible.
  • objective: Protect endangered species and biodiversity “hot spots”.
  • GOAL 2:
Create A Recreational Trail System From Lake City To Ichetucknee State Park.

  • objective: Link residential areas and existing recreational sites.
  • objective: Integrate trail system within greenway so as to minimize recreational impacts onto wildlife and vegetation.
  • objective: Utilize this recreational trail as a “buffer” to surrounding developed areas.

    Determining Greenway Alignment

    I. CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Placement of proposed greenway from the FINAL LAND USE MAP.
  • Positive Elements: (To be incorporated)

    Existing and Identified Conservation Areas
Existing Wetlands, Open Water, and Streams
Existing Lowlands (swamps, marshes, and open water)
Existing Uplands (hammocks, pinelands, and sandhill habitats)
Areas with Desired Adjacencies (existing pine plantations, improved pasture, and hunting

  • Negative Elements: (To be avoided)

    Existing Residential Areas
    Existing Roads
Other, Existing ‘Incompatible’ Land Uses (commercial, industrial, and institutional

    Determining Recreational Trail Alignment

    I. CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Utilize existing trails.
  • Locate along existing ‘human-impact’ edges (residential areas, roadways)
  • Avoid dividing contiguous areas of habitat with trail.
  • Access existing recreational areas and residential areas.
  • Locate along ecological greenway as much as possible.
  • II. IDENTIFIED ROUTE
