TITLE: CURRENT RANGE OF CHIPOLA SLABSHELL (ELLIPTIO CHIOLAENSIS), (FAT THREERIDGE (AMBLEMA NEISLERII), GULF MOCCASINSHELL (MEDIONIDUS PENICILLATUS), OCHLOCKONEE MOCCASINSHELL (MEDIONIDUS SIMPSONIANUS), OVAL PIGTOE (PLEUROBEMA PYRIFORME), PURPLE BANKCLIMBER (ELLIPTOIDEUS SLOATIANUS), AND SHINY-RAYED POCKETBOOK (LANSILIS SUBANGULATA)
Geodataset Name: MUSSELS_CURRENT Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE Geodataset Feature: LINEGENERAL DESCRIPTION:
| This shapefile was created to visually represent the current range of the listed mussels species. Also, the dataset was created to calculate the species range in river miles so an estimate of occupied habitat could be determined. |

A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasetsare not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References sectionand the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. Source data: National Hydrography Dataset medium resolution arc data. The NHD is based upon the content of USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) hydrography data integrated with reach- related information from the EPA Reach File Version 3 (RF3). The NHD supersedes DLG and RF3 by incorporating them, not by replacing them. This data set was created using ArcView 3.2a 1) A list of occupied rivers and streams was compiled using all available sources of mussel locations. These included written sources and any existing GIS layers depicting mussel locations and collections sites. Based on these point locations, an upper extent was described for each river or stream. For currently occupied ranges, a lower extent was also described for each river or stream. Continuous ranges were assumed for historically occupied rivers and streams, so no lower extent was used. Instead, the ranges extend downstream to the junction with the main river. 2) Because the point locality typically occurred at a bridge crossing, the occupied range was extended at least one mile above the highest collection point and one mile below the lowest collection point. 3) Rivers and streams were selected from the NHD by performing queries on the name field in the reach files. Rivers and streams were also selected manually in the view. These selections were then used to select the appropriate rivers and streams in the NHD arc files. By using the arc files, only river centerlines would be included in the ranges, ensuring greater accuracy when calculating river miles. 4) Depending on the range of each species, selected records from the NHD arc files for the Suwannee, Ochlockonee, Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint, Chipola, and Econfina river basins were merged together using the X-Tools extension (version 6/1/2001) Merge Themes command. 5) The tables of the resulting data layers were attributed with the following fields: river or stream name, comments, sub-basin, state, and NHD source theme. 6) Then the data layers were projected from Geographic to UTM NAD 83, Zone 16, meters, using the ArcView Projector! extension. 7) The field Length in Meters was added to the attribute tables using the X-Tools extension Calculate Length command. The field Length in Miles was also added to the attribute tables using the field calculator request [Length_meters] / 1609.344. This field was queried by river or stream name to calculate the occupied habitat in river miles. Process Date: Unknown |
