USER NOTES:
This dataset contains informatin on port facilities from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD) 2003. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Ports database is an extract from the National Waterway Network database consisting of fifty-six Port Series Reports covering nearly 10,000 facilities in more than 200 port areas. The Ports database is a geographic database of the US Army Corps of Engineers Ports in and around the United States, for analytical studies of waterway performance, for compiling commodity flow statistics, and for mapping purposes. The National Waterway Network was created on behalf of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Bureau of Census, and the U.S. Coast Guard by Vanderbilt University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Additional agencies with input into network development include Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, Maritime Administration, Military Traffic Management Command, Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Federal Railroad Administration. Attribute accuracy is tested by manual comparison of the source with hard copy printouts and/or symbolized display of digital line graphs on an interactive computer graphic system; selected attributes that cannot be visually verified on plots or on screen, are interactively queried and verified on screen. The accuracy of each point element is correlated to the data source used to derive that element. For example, links and nodes derived from 1:100,000 scale Digital Line Graphs are more accurate than links and nodes derived from 1:500,000 scale NOAA Navigational Charts. Elements with an "M" in the source field (indicating an unknown or missing source) are the least accurate. A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multicounty or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html
