This dataset contains the State of Florida subset of the 2019 National Inventory of Dams (NID). The NID is a congressionally authorized database, which documents dams in the U.S. and its territories. The NID is maintained and published by USACE, in cooperation with the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), the states and territories, and federal dam-regulating agencies. The database contains information about the dam’s location, size, purpose, type, last inspection, regulatory facts, and other technical data. The information contained in the NID is updated approximately every two years. State and federal dam regulators provided their data from May to November 2018 for inclusion in the 2018 database. A partial NID update was conducted (Nov 2019- Jan 2020) with updated data from several state dam safety offices. Please be aware that inspection and EAP dates reflect 2019 data, so any inspections or updates since then will not be reflected in the current NID. USACE manages the NID but does not own most of the dams in the NID. Operation, maintenance, and repair of these dams is the responsibility of each dam owner. Please contact the respective state or federal regulatory authority for the most up-to-date information. This layer is an update to the FGDL layer USACE_DAMS_2018.
<purpose>The goal of the NID is to include all dams in the U.S. that meet these criteria, yet in reality, is limited to information that can be gathered and properly interpreted with the given funding. The Inventory initially consisted of approximately 45,000 dams, which were gathered from extensive record searches and some feature extraction from aerial imagery. Since continued and methodical updates have been conducted, data collection has been focused on the most reliable data sources, which are the various federal and state government dam construction and regulation offices.</purpose>
<supplinf>Congress first authorized the US Army Corps of Engineers to inventory dams in the United States with the National Dam Inspection Act (Public Law 92-367) of 1972. The NID was first published in 1975, with a few updates as resources permitted over the next ten years. The Water Resources Development Act of 1986 (P.L. 99-662) authorized the Corps to maintain and periodically publish an updated NID, with re-authorization and a dedicated funding source provided under the Water Resources Development Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-3). The Corps also began close collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state regulatory offices to obtain more accurate and complete information. The National Dam Safety and Security Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-310) reauthorized the National Dam Safety Program and included the maintenance and update of the NID by the Corps of Engineers. The most recent Dam Safety Act of 2006 reauthorized the maintenance and update of the NID. The NID consists of dams meeting at least one of the following criteria; 1) High hazard classification - loss of one human life is likely if the dam fails, 2) Significant hazard classification - possible loss of human life and likely significant property or environmental destruction, 3) Equal or exceed 25 feet in height and exceed 15 acre-feet in storage, 4) Equal or exceed 50 acre-feet storage and exceed 6 feet in height.</supplinf>

<useconst>The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html</useconst>

<procdesc>GeoPlan downloaded the Florida subset of the National Inventory of Dams (NID) from the following U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) website on June 2021. https://nid.sec.usace.army.mil The State of Florida subset excel table (FL_U.xlsx) was available for download from the Downloads (Public) tab. https://nid.sec.usace.army.mil/ords/f?p=105:19:15377754200545::NO::: The table was converted to a CSV file format and imported into a file geodatabase. The "add XY data" tool was then used to create a spatial layer from the XY coordinates provided in the database using the NAD 83 geographic coordinate system. Please Note: The original table downloaded contained 1109 records, however, 1 record contained no Latitude/Longitude information. RECORDID: 8987 | NIDID: FL10111 This layer was exported as a shapefile and projected to FGDL Albers. The following tasks were undertaken once the shapefile was projected: - Uppercased all records. - Renamed several fields that were truncated during the conversion to shapefile process. - Added and calculated the PRIMARY_PU field. - Added and calculated the MGRS and GOOGLEMAP fields. - A DESCRIPT field was added based on Dam Name and NID ID. - A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date of download. - Updated Metadata based off of information found in the Help tab of the Website.</procdesc>

        <attrdef>NID ID (Alphanumeric)
The official NID identification number for the dam, known formerly as the National ID. This is a required field, and must have an entry for each dam included in the NID. This field is used as the unique identifier for each dam record. The first two characters of the identity are the state two-letter abbreviation, based on the location of the dam. Typically, the last five characters of the identity are a unique number (AB#####); although States are allowed to use alphanumeric combinations in these last five characters.
For saddle dams or dikes, the NID ID is the same as the main dam. See saddle dam definition in Number Separate Structures Field (listed below).</attrdef>

The River or Stream designation may be entered in one of two ways. For the convenience of some organizations, an alternative field entry is provided which is consistent with the “tributary and offstream” designations used in the 1995-96 NID. If the alternative form is used, the NID Data Team will convert it to the standard form prior to inclusion in the national inventory.
River or Stream Standard Entry: The official name of the river or stream on which the dam is built. If the stream is unnamed, identify it as a tributary to a named river, e.g., Snake-TR. If the dam is located offstream, enter the name of the river or stream plus “-OS”, e.g., Snake-OS.
River or Stream Alternative Entry: The official name of the river or stream on which the dam is built. If the stream is unnamed, identify it as a tributary to a named river, e.g., TR-Snake. If the darn is located offstream, enter the name of the river or stream plus the word, “OFFSTREAM,” e.g., Snake OFFSTREAM.</attrdef>

Code to indicate the type of owner:
Codes are concatenated if the dam is owned by more than one type. For example, if the dam is owned by a lake association and a public utility, the owner type would be listed as
PU. For multiple owners under the same type, one code is used. For example, if multiple individuals own one dam, it will list P for private dam ownership.
Some examples of owner types. Local Government should have taxing authority or is supported by taxes. A Lake District is supported by taxes and considered Local Government. A lake association is supported by association dues and would not be a Local Government owner type but rather Private owner type.</attrdef>

    <resdesc>DOWNLOADABLE DATA</resdesc>
<distliab>The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html</distliab>
