This dataset contains critical habitat (line) designated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for endangered or threatened species located within the State of Florida. When a species is proposed for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must consider whether there are areas of habitat believed to be essential the species’ conservation. Those areas may be proposed for designation as “critical habitat.” Critical habitat is a term defined and used in the Act. It is a specific geographic area(s) that contains features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and that may require special management and protection. Critical habitat may include an area that is not currently occupied by the species but that will be needed for its recovery. An area is designated as “critical habitat” after the Service publishes a proposed Federal regulation in the Federal Register and receives and considers public comments on the proposal. The final boundaries of the critical habitat are also published in the Federal Register.
<purpose>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. Federal agencies are required to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on actions they carry out, fund, or authorize to ensure that their actions will not destroy or adversely modify critical habitat. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers of the importance of these areas to the conservation of a listed species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</purpose>

This page contains the spatial data for active proposed and final critical habitat for FWS only and Joint FWS/NMFS threatened and endangered species. ECOS is a FWS-sponsored platform for FWS data. The ECOS critical habitat on-line mapper includes (some, not all of the) proposed and final critical habitat for species listed as Threatened and Endangered by the FWS, or that are jointly managed by FWS/NMFS. The on-line mapper does not include species which are under the sole jurisdiction of NMFS. Users who are interested in critical habitat for NMFS species are referred to the NMFS critical habitat Website, here:
https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/endangered-species-conservation/critical-habitat
Important note Not all of the critical habitat data designated by the Fish & Wildlife Service is available from this portal. If you require critical habitat spatial data not available here, please contact the FWS Lead Region for that species Please see the following link for a zip file containing two shapefiles, one for lines, one for polygons, which aggregate all critical habitat shapes for all species. <distliab>The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources) who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist. Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no warranties, guaranties or representations as to the truth, accuracy or completeness of the data provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no representations or warranties about the quality or suitability of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using, modifying, contributing or distributing the materials. A note about data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. This layer is the parent for Suwannee Moccasinshell Critical Habitat (Proposed), which uses the following selection: CH_USFWS_LINE.SPCODE LIKE 'F%' AND STATUS = 'PROPOSED'. This layer is the parent for Gulf Sturgeon Critical Habitat (Lines), which uses the following selection: CH_USFWS_LINE.COMNAME = 'GULF STURGEON'. This layer is the parent for Mussels Critical Habitat, which uses the following selection: CH_USFWS_LINE.SPCODE LIKE 'F%' AND STATUS = 'FINAL'. This layer is the parent for Loggerhead Sea Turtle Critical Habitat (Lines), which uses the following selection: CH_USFWS_LINE.COMNAME = 'LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE'.</idAbs><idPurp>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</idPurp><idCredit>The data found in this file were developed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service field offices.
