When a species is proposed for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must consider whether there are areas of habitat believed to be essential the species’ conservation. Those areas may be proposed for designation as “critical habitat.” Critical habitat is a term defined and used in the Act. It is a specific geographic area(s) that contains features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and that may require special management and protection. Critical habitat may include an area that is not currently occupied by the species but that will be needed for its recovery. An area is designated as “critical habitat” after the Service publishes a proposed Federal regulation in the Federal Register and receives and considers public comments on the proposal. The final boundaries of the critical habitat are also published in the Federal Register. This dataset is an update to the FGDL layer CH_USFWS_LINE_AUG19
<purpose>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. Federal agencies are required to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on actions they carry out, fund, or authorize to ensure that their actions will not destroy or adversely modify critical habitat. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers of the importance of these areas to the conservation of a listed species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</purpose><supplinf>All data were developed by FWS field offices. This page contains the spatial data for active proposed and final critical habitat for FWS only and Joint FWS/NMFS threatened and endangered species. ECOS is a FWS-sponsored platform for FWS data. The ECOS critical habitat on-line mapper includes (some, not all of the) proposed and final critical habitat for species listed as Threatened and Endangered by the FWS, or that are jointly managed by FWS/NMFS. The on-line mapper does not include species which are under the sole jurisdiction of NMFS. Users who are interested in critical habitat for NMFS species are referred to the NMFS critical habitat Website, here:
https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/endangered-species-conservation/critical-habitat
Important note Not all of the critical habitat data designated by the Fish & Wildlife Service is available from this portal. If you require critical habitat spatial data not available here, please contact the FWS Lead Region for that species Please see the following link for a zip file containing two shapefiles, one for lines, one for polygons, which aggregate all critical habitat shapes for all species. During the QA/QC process the following tasks were undertaken:

- Reprojected to FGDL Albers 3087 from GCS_WGS_1984 using the following transformation:
 WGS_1984_(ITRF00)_To_NAD_1983 + NAD_1983_To_HARN_Florida
 CRITHAB_POLY_3087

- Clipped features that intersected the CH_NMFS_EXTENT dataset and exported to
 CRITHAB_POLY_3087_Clip

- Uppercased all records in the table (Except SCINAME).
- Uppercased all field names
- A DESCRIPT field was added based on Cthe following:
 [COMNAME] & " - (" & [STATUS] & ")(" & [LISTING_ST] & ")"
- A FGDLAQDATE field was added based on date downloaded from source.

Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. This dataset is an update to the FGDL layer CH_USFWS_LINE_AUG19</idAbs><idPurp>Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.</idPurp><idCredit>The data found in this file were developed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service field offices.
